4/9/2023 0 Comments Inspiration point![]() Hiked up there Thursday afternoon and even though it was 80 degrees in town, it felt cooler under the shade of the magnificent trees that covered much of the lower portion of the trail. A few sections of the trail were rerouted due to mudslides, downed trees and other obstacles. Trail was in decent condition considering the torrential downpour the week before. Water level was high enough to make the numerous stream crossings difficult without getting wet. Hiked up to the power lines on Tuesday, haven't been on this trail in years and was I amazed! Sooooo much new growth, so much water, wildflowers all over (yellows, golds, purples, whites, etc). There are some big trees on that stretch worth seeing but it puts the water fountain about and hour and a half out The trail can also be entered about a mile down hill at Stevan's Park. Maria encapsulated her experience of our walk as 'restorative'. The incline is steady all the way but nothing difficult or slippery uphill or down. It's mostly very dry up there but the creek showed a couple wet holes and we came across a little spring with a trickle of fresh water that was mangled with animal track. About a mile and a quarter up there's a shaded water fountain with a couple picnic tables on private property for public use and a pleasant rest. Contrary to the view from the trail head there is actually nice cover from the sun most of the way and its more interesting terrain than San Ysidro trail we were on last week. The footing was good for the whole of the hike after the first 200 yards. My wife and I hiked a little more than an hour up Jesusita trail (Inspiration Point). I have a new friend who is recovering from a knee injury so I have been scouting trails for good footing and trail quality. The hike is about 3.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of The city, the ocean and the Channel Islands. You can see people getting their morning and evening workouts running,īiking, walking the dog, and taking the kids for a walk year round. The cliffs of Inspiration Point are exceptionally dangerous as they are formed of crumbly rock, slippery slopes and sheer drop-offs. While no trails lead down into the canyon from the steep cliffs of Inspiration Point, the Rim Trail extends south to Bryce Point and north to Sunset Point. They are tall and thin and unique among pines in that the entire lengths of their branches are covered with needles, giving them the bushy appearance that earned them the nickname "fox-tail pines." Look carefully as you walk through these barren slopes - you might just discover a Mountain Short-horned Lizard trying to remain camouflaged. ![]() While these are famous for their venerable ages and gnarled trunks, younger bristlecones take on a very different appearance. The barren slopes of Inspiration Point have a mix of trees including Bristlecone Pines. ![]() This upper White Member of the Claron Formation is visible below Inspiration Point, although few hoodoos form in this softer rock. The Claron Formation consists of two members, the lower Pink Member, a "dirty" limestone that contains sand, silt, and iron that lends the rock its reddish color, and the upper White Member, a purer freshwater limestone. All who look out from this point are bound to be inspired, considering the intricacies of the hoodoos and their formation through the erosion of the Claron Formation. ![]() From here, visitors look toward the Silent City (near Sunset Point) with its many rows of seemingly frozen hoodoos set against the backdrop of Boat Mesa. ![]() The viewpoint at Inspiration Point consists of three levels that provide varied spectacular perspectives of the main amphitheater. ![]()
